In a closed underground transport area, the toxins produced by the smoke are fatal. Therefore, the transportation industry requires the use of all materials that emit harmful chemicals when burned. The prohibited materials include a variety of thermoplastics that are extremely flammable and emit toxic fumes.
The bulk molding compound (BMC) and sheet molding compound (SMC) are different from these materials, and they have high flame retardancy values and meet UL94 - 5V requirements. In addition, the low levels of toxic fumes from thermoset materials are why they are recognized by the closed transport environment. Many transportation systems are driven by live "rails", which are high-voltage rods mounted on either side of the track. Because of their high dielectric properties, thermoset materials are widely used to produce electrical conductor insulators and awnings.
