1. Brief introduction of SMC material
SMC material is a kind of sheet molding compound, the main raw materials of which are GF (special yarn), UP (unsaturated resin), low shrinkage additives, MD (filler) and various additives.
2. Applications of SMC material in various industries
(1) Car
SMC material has become an ideal material for the automotive industry to replace steel with plastic due to its low processing energy consumption, low cost, great design freedom, excellent molding processability, and no corrosion. There are sorts of SMC car parts till now. At present, the main plastic parts used in automobiles include automobile bumper assembly, front side panel, front radiator cover, water tank cover, intake pipe, engine, tappet chamber cover plate, trunk, spare wheel warehouse, oil filter cover, vent valve assembly and so on.
(2) Railway vehicles
In railway vehicles, this kind of material is mainly used in vehicle window frames, sanitary components, seats, coffee table tops, carriage wall panels and roof panels, etc. Due to the good electrical insulation of the SMC material, the traction rod of the electrified railway and the bracket of the subway transmission rail have all adopted the SMC material.
(3) Electronic, electrical and communication engineering
On account of its properities of electrical insulation, specific strength, specific modulus and mold flexibility, SMC material is an ideal processing material for electrical devices and components which severely requires good electrical performance, structural strength and light weight.
Therefore, it is applied in electric appliance housings, insulators, insulating operating tools, motor commutators, air switch bases and covers, high-voltage switch cabinets, arc baffles, arc extinguishing covers, printed circuit boards, explosion-proof telephone housings for coal mines, electrical cables distributor and so on.
(4) Construction engineering
Due to its excellent performance in dyeing, decoration, acid and alkali resistance as well as low moisture absorption, SMC material has been used in the construction industry for high-level water tanks, sanitary ware, purification tanks, building templates, and these products have already formed certain scale of production.
(5) Other aspects
There are many SMC products in various fields. Seats in the newly-built gymnasiums, waiting rooms, conference halls, restaurants and buses are mostly made of SMC material and it is estimated that the consumption in this aspect is over 200 t/a.
In addition, SMC material also has a wide range of applications in chemical anti-corrosion, marine transportation, aerospace, aviation and military equipment, sports equipment, etc.
